Chef's Notes

This venison taco recipe takes a midwestern classic and amps up the flavor! We're taking ground venison and throwing in a splash of orange juice to inject flavor and sweetness into your taco night. Finish with salsa, cheese, and cilantro, these tacos are sure to satisfy even the pickiest wild-game eaters!

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp of olive oil

  • 1lb of ground venison

  • 1 tbsp of cumin

  • 1 tbsp of chili powder

  • 1/2 tsp of nutmeg

  • 1 tbsp of orange juice

  • Salt and Pepper to taste

  • Corn Tortillas

Optional Toppings

  • Salsa

  • 1/2 lime juiced

  • 1 avocado sliced

  • 1 jalapeno chopped

  • 1 sweet onion chopped

  • Cilantro finely chopped

  • Cotija Cheese

Also Works With

Any large game animal

Special Equipment

For best flavor use cast iron pan

Preparation

  1. In a large skillet heat olive oil and add ground venison until browned.

  2. Season meat with cumin, chili powder, and nutmeg. (Cumin pulls a lot of flavor out of venison, add more based on desired taste)

  3. Salt and pepper meat to taste

  4. Before removing the skillet from heat, add the orange juice and stir until just absorbed into meat. (This brings out a sweet flavor and also tenderizes the venison)

  5. Remove from heat, spoon meat into corn tortillas, and load up with your favorite toppings!
